Lily Tomlin has spent 42 years with partner Jane Wagner. Now that same-sex marriage is becoming legal in more and more states, the couple is considering tying the knot. The 73-year-old actress said that while she and Wagner, 78, will consider making their union "official," she does not anticipate a tradition celebration, but is equally delighted that she now has the opportunity to do so considering recent court ruling in a handful of states. The two met in 1971 when Tomlin approached Wagner about collaborating on her comedy album. After watching an after-school special Wagner wrote, Tomlin knew she would be the perfect fit for her album, but what she did not expect was for everything to fall into place in more ways than one.
"Frankly, I was pretty taken with her as soon as I saw her," Tomlin told Metro Weekly in 2006. "We just sort of clicked. We became a couple right away." Wagner helped Tomlin write many of her specials, including movies "Moment By Moment" and "The Incrediblr Shrinking Woman," which she also directed. She also wrote many of Tomlin's Emmy-award-winning comedy specials. Tomlin said that while she doesn't consider marriage the end-all, be-all, she is pleased to be able to do so, even laughing about her refusal to go with traditional nuances, saying that perhaps she and Wagner would walk down the aisle in chicken suits.
"You don't really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice," she said. "Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very very happy about it." She did not reveal when the couple would be getting married or if any of their future matrimony plans are solid at all.
