Danny Pino joined the cast of "Law and Order: SVU" in season 13, replacing Christopher Meloni as detective Elliot Stabler. Detective Amaro replaced detective Stabler as Olivia Benson's (Mariska Hargitay) partner and the character has his own developed arc and storyline. Hargitay's character is dominating this season of "Special Victims Unit." The season began with her abduction and torture at the hands of a serial rapist the "SVU" team failed to imprison the season before. Hargitay's Emmy worth performance opened up new wounds for the seasoned detective and explored new levels of Benson's character.
"SVU" star Danny Pino recently spoke with Wet Paint about where his character's story will be heading as season 15 of "Law and Order: SVU" gets rolling. Season 15 of "SVU" began with a controversial episode involving detective Benson. The brutality of Benson's ordeal had some viewers wondering if "SVU" has gone too far. "You know any show that's been on the air 15 seasons has its challenges of remaining relevant," Pino said to Wet Paint. "The goal is to write shows that are provocative while also changing the paradigms of these characters."
Pino also gave Wet Paint an idea of where the season is heading and what fans should expect from his character. "The premiere set things in motion in the squad room. There's a sea of change. And I think the entire season can be encompassed in the term 'Save Benson.' It wasn't just about the first episode. She needs to become a survivor not a victim - and her partner is the closest thing she has to someone who can attempt to empathize with her. He's someone who want to help her and wants to see her back to the strong and confident Liv."
"But the stress of that does start to affect his personal life," Pino continued. "His world will crumble because of the stress he feels in the squad room." This season of "Law and Order: SVU" hit the ground running first with Benson's kidnapping then with two episodes taken right out of the newspapers. One "SVU" episode combined the Trayvon Martin and Paula Deen headlines when a celebrity chef shot and killed a young black boy believing he was going to rape her. The case divided the city and the chef was accused of being a racist.
Another episode of "SVU" parodied the Anthony Weiner scandal. A friend of the SVU District Attorney is running for Mayor of NYC but his political aspirations are dashed when news of a sexting scandal breaks. The next all new episode of "Law and Order: SVU" will air on NBC Wednesday Nov. 6.
