Las Vegas Raiders' rookie cornerback Nate Hobbs, who was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, pleaded guilty Wednesday of a traffic charge.
The 22-year-old's lawyer Richard Schonfeld submitted a written guilty plea to careless driving, reported Associated Press. As part of Hobbs' agreement with the District Attorney's office, he will pay $685 as fine. A Las Vegas justice of the peace, which accepted the plea, also imposed 20 hours of community service, and ordered the athlete to stay out of trouble. If he fails to comply, he faces a 30-day prison sentence, according to ESPN.
He was taken to police custody before dawn Jan. 3 after he was found asleep inside a vehicle that was stopped on an exit ramp of parking garage of a Las Vegas Strip casino. According to prosecutors, his blood-alcohol level was tested at 0.07%, which is just under the DUI legal limit in Nevada of 0.08%.
A Wednesday statement released by Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said that Hobbs was not legally under the influence when he was arrested Jan. 3. The statement also read that Hobbs will submit to an alcohol treatment program provided by the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Players Association. Hobbs’ lawyer noted that the court order was “going forward.”
Hobbs also faces a separate reckless driving charge after he was ticketed on a Las Vegas-area freeway almost two weeks ago. He was clocked speeding at 110 miles per hour (mph) in a 65 mph zone, said a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper. The trooper reported following Hobbs’ car after it sped past a patrol vehicle and made many lane changes that were unsafe. Schonfeld said that his client received the ticket and added that he will respond to the charge in court. Hobbs is expected to face court on April 18.
Hobbs played Las Vegas Raiders' last game of the season on Jan. 15. His driving cases came shortly after Raiders' receiver Henry Ruggs III was involved in a high-speed crash that killed a 23-year-old woman while the player was allegedly driving drunk. According to New York Post, a year ago, a DUI charge was dropped against Raiders player, Josh Jacobs, stemming from a vehicle crash in an airport traffic tunnel in Las Vegas.
