The Las Vegas Raiders decided to cut ties with cornerback Damon Arnette after his disturbing death threat video that recently went viral.
In the video, the 25-year-old footballer is threatening to take someone's life while waving a gun.
On Monday, Raiders general manager Mike Mayock called the decision to release him a "very painful" one. He said that they spent significant effort, time and resources "trying to help him in all aspects of his life," reported New York Post.
He pointed out that they can’t stand for the video of Arnette with a gun and threatening to kill someone. He found the content to be unacceptable, and said that "contrary to our values and our owner Mark Davis has been very clear and very consistent that this is not how we will conduct ourselves in this community." The bottom line, he said is that the Raiders will "not tolerate this type of behavior.”
Between 2020 and 2021, the player, who was a first-round pick in last year's draft out of Ohio State, was part of 13 games for the American football team. Before the 2020 draft, Mayock said that the footballer’s character was a “significant concern," but back then they thought it was "an acceptable risk." More homework was done on him than anybody they had done in the years Mayock had been with the Raiders, but obviously, they missed, and "that is 100 percent on me," he said.
According to NFL Network, the athlete is reportedly facing several lawsuits, including one filed last month alleging him of a hit-and-run in October last year. It allegedly caused physical harm to a woman. Arnette was allegedly running late for a meeting, and chose to drive off after the accident.
Additionally, he allegedly had a fight with a valet worker in Las Vegas, as per a lawsuit that also claims that he poked the worker in the chest and spat on him.
The Raiders have seen quite a lot of drama in the past few weeks. Last week, they also released star wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, who was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) resulting in death after his car hit a 23-year-old woman’s Toyota RAV4.
In another controversy, the Raiders head coach Jon Gruden was asked to quit last month after insensitive mails addressed to Bruce Allen, ex-Washington Football Team President, were leaked to media. His assistant Rich Bisaccia was announced as interim coach of the Raiders.
