More than 40 years ago, Nuccio Bertone exclaimed "Countach!" when he first laid his eyes on the "Project 112" Lamborghini prototype in his studio. Piedmontese for "extremely beautiful woman," the name would later carry over to the production Lamborghini supercar. Now, just imagine what Bertone would have said if Lamborghini ever designed a Countach roadster. A phenomenon that is perhaps singularly unique to Lamborghini, no vehicle is so dramatically and utterly transformed with the simple act of removing its top.
Today, Lamborghini has finally unveiled its Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster, which is slated for a summer 2013 release.
Design-wise, the new Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is a substantial leap from the Murcielago Roadster. In the past, the Murcielago was prohibited from being driven above 100 mph with the top on due to concerns that excessive wind buffeting may cause the whole thing to come right off. Now, the new Aventador Roadster functions more like a targa, with a removable 13 lbs. carbon fiber roof panel that is actually sculpted with a more complex polygon design that plays off the rest of the car. What's more, the roof can snap into two pieces and fit perfectly into the Aventador's trunk in the front.
Extending the crisply folded shapes of the Roadster's canopy, the new Aventador will also feature a new geometric design for the engine cover to extend the new, intricate design across the length of the bird's eye view. Behind the occupants, Lamborghini features a rear power window that can be lowered or raised, a la McLaren MP4-12C Spider, depending on how much engine noise isolation is desired.
In additional to the newly redesigned roof panels, the new Aventador Roadster also features new ducting to cool the engine bay as well as a protective structure for the passengers.
Beyond the new roof and styling differences, the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster will share identical performance specs with the standard Aventador. The same brutal 6.5 liter V12 powerplant will deliver a staggering output of 691-hp and 509 lb.-ft. of torque. Acceleration from 0-to-60 mph will only take 3 seconds and the Aventador will be capable of sustaining its launch all the way up to a fire-spitting top speed of 217 mph.
