Lady Gaga came under fire on Twitter after appealing to battleground-state voters to vote for Joe Biden in a new endorsement video. Critics panned the video online, saying the A-list singer missed the mark with flyover-state voters.
“Hey, this is Lady Gaga. I’m voting for America, which means I’m voting for Joe Biden,” she says in the video. “And if you live in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, or Arizona, I encourage you to vote,” she adds, before taking a sip of beer, crushing her can and throwing it on the ground. “Cheers to the 2020 election,” she concludes.
The endorsement video made the rounds online on Sunday, drawing criticism from Twitter users who claimed Lady Gaga was trying to look like a redneck.
“This is Lady Gaga trying to appeal to Middle America. HOW DO YOU DO FELLOW PICK-UP TRUCK OWNERS I LIKE BEER TOO,” wrote one user.
While many mocked the singer for allegedly trying to appeal to conservative voters, others criticized her for letting a full can of beer go to waste. “Real rednecks wouldn’t have wasted that perfectly good beer, Gaga. I speak from experience,” one user wrote.
Meanwhile, Lady Gaga clapped back at Donald Trump after he and his supporters criticized her affiliation with Joe Biden. In a press release, Trump’s communication director Tim Murtaugh called the singer “desperate” for helping Trump’s rival with his campaign in Pennsylvania.
“Nothing exposes Biden’s disdain for the forgotten working men and women of PA like campaigning with anti-fracking activist Lady Gaga,” he wrote in his release. “This desperate effort to drum up enthusiasm is actually a sharp stick in the eye for 600,000 Pennsylvanians who work in the fracking industry.”
For her part, Lady Gaga wrote on Twitter that she’s glad to be living “rent-free” in their heads. Over the weekend, she also posted a video reminding Americans to vote wisely. “The government is not going away tomorrow and unless you have a plane ticket to another country and somewhere that you’re gonna live, this is gonna be your home. I’m telling you no matter how you feel, your future is still in your hands with this vote,” she said in the video.
