Netflix has finally gained some ground as far as its plans for a “Gundam” movie are concerned. Word of the beloved sci-fi anime already came out in 2018 but it appears progress is being made with Jordan Vogt-Roberts revealed to be directing the military science fiction media franchise.

According to @NXOnNetflix, Legendary Pictures is now working on the feature film to bring Sunrise’s popular mech suit anime back to life and on Netflix. Legendary and Sunrise were believed to be working on coming up with a film adaptation of another robot-inspired film.

Legendary Pictures is no stranger when it comes to bringing robots back to life. That list includes “Pacific Rim” which took the world by storm when it premiered in 2013. Aside from that, the group is also behind other films such as “Kong: Skull Island,” “War Craft,” “Jurassic World” and most recently, “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

Aside from Vogt-Roberts directing the “Gundam” film version, other details remain scarce for now. Aside from Vogt-Roberts, Brian K. Vaughn will serve as the writer and executive producer of the live-action film. Aside from that, there is no word on who will be cast as “Gundam’s” main protagonists as well as the story plot. As The Verge pointed out, only the working title and the one directing it are known for now.

“Gundam” will be Legendary Pictures' latest live-action film that Netflix has on its plate. The streaming service is also working on another Sunrise anime like “Cowboy Bebop.” John Cho will take on the starring role for the flick which could come out early this year.

With most waiting for the announcement of more “Gundam” film details, there are a lot of materials to work with. The series launched in 1979 as a TV series and struggled to gain popularity. All that changed in 1980 due to a wide proliferation of adaptations across animated feature films, novels, manga, toys, models and video games, Variety reported.

But this early, it is clear that anime fans and sci-fi lovers will be treated to interesting battles instead. Just like the original series, expect a lot of giant robot battles as humans will most likely step up to don those Mobile Suits to protect the earth.
