Oklahoma is getting some serious help from its NBA home team as well as other groups surrounding the organization in the wake of tornadoes that ransacked the state.
Kevin Durant, 24, of the Oklahoma City Thunder pledged $1 million Tuesday to the American Red Cross to assist with disaster relief efforts, the NBA reported.
Tornadoes swept through Oklahoma Monday, demolishing homes and businesses particularly in Moore, OK. Hundreds of people were injured and 24 were killed.
"The Red Cross relies on its donors to perform its mission in relieving human suffering following disasters," Janienne Bella, Red Cross's regional CEO said in a statement. "Mr. Durant's gift and support to Oklahoma comes at a time of great need and we're forever thankful for his generosity."
The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association later pledged $1 million each the same day as Durant. The Thunder organization and Chesapeake Energy Corporation, which owns the naming rights for the team, followed suit and pledged $1 million each.
"Our hearts go out to all those affected by the devastation that has occurred within our community this week," Thunder chairman Clay Bennett said in a statement. "We are focusing Thunder resources to help where we can in the relief efforts and to support the organizations that are on the ground assisting those affected by this week's storms. Even with so much loss, the strength and resiliency of this community have once again been on display, and we will continue to work together as our community and state recover from this disaster."
Durant is not the only one opening their wallets following the tornadoes. Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers pledged $1,000 for a home run made Monday night and vows to pledge another $1,000 for all home runs made until the All-Star break, the center fielder tweeted Monday:
Kemp went to high school in Midwest City, CBS Sports reported. Both Durant and Kemp have charities of their own, which are dedicated to helping financially disadvantaged children and creating educational outlets. Kirsten Bell also donated an undisclosed amount to the cause, she tweeted late Monday.
