Kerry Washington hosted SNL last night to much critical acclaim. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show proved that Kerry Washington "brings a spark of energy to most anything she touches." Last night's show focused on the lack of diversity in the SNL cast. The opening sequence had Washington as First Lady Michelle Obama before it was announced that Oprah Winfrey was arriving for dinner, at which point Washington had to run out to a quick costume change because, as the show itself pointed out, there are no black women in the cast. Washington's performace has won praise from critics and viewers alike.
Eminem, however, did not fare so well. As the show's musical guest, the rapper performed songs from his upcoming album, "The Marshall Mathers LP2." He peformed the single "Berzerk" with famed producer Rick Rubin. Eminem returned for a second performance of "Survival" with Skyler Grey, who sang the chorus. The song was written as the soundtrack for the video game "Call of Duty: Ghosts." However, the performances have drawn criticism as some have claimed the rapper was lip syncing during the performance. Fans took to twitter to blast the Detroit rapper for what they claim was a lip synced performance.
Kerry Washington's performance, however, remains the standout. Not only was she funny and filled with energy, but the message of the show was felt by viewers. The sketch came several days after Lorne Michaels directly addressed the lack of black women hired on his show when he told the Associated Press, "It's not like it's not a priority for us. It will happen. I'm sure it will happen. You don't do anyone a favor if they're not ready." What do you think? Why aren't there more black comedians on TV? Do you think Eminem was lip syncing?
