Kelly Rowland's new album Talk a Good Game comes out next month, and so far we've already heard the smooth Lil Wayne-assisted "Ice" and "Kisses Down Low," but this morning Rowland unleashed an entirely different kind of conversation starter in the song "Dirty Laundry."
The song finds Rowland airing out her feelings about an abusive ex-boyfriend and having to watch as Beyoncé's career skyrocketed while her own failed to reach those kinds of heights.
The singer addresses Beyonce's major success with the lyrics, When my sister was onstage killin' it like a motherf--ker / I was enraged, feelin' it like a motherf--ker / Bird in a cage, you would never know what I was dealin' with / Went our separate ways, but I was happy she was killin' it.
Rowland continues, singing, "Bittersweet / She was up, I was down / No lie, I feel good for her but what do I do know?" She also suggests that she was abused by someone in the music industry. Take a listen to the track below:
The 32-year-old singer then airs her "Dirty Laundry" about a relationship that turned abusive, singing, I was trapped in this house, lying to my mama / Thought it could get no worse, as we maximize the drama / Started to call them people on him, I was battered / He hit the window like it was me, until it shattered.
"It was very emotional. It took me days to record," Rowland tells Billboard. "I had to get past being so upset and actually sing the song, not sob through it. I always hope that my music can inspire someone, the same way other artists inspire me. Dream said, 'I want to write you a record so that people will know exactly who you are, underneath it all.'"
The-Dream adds that he had to "push" Rowland to go outside her comfort zone, compiling highlights from different personal stories she shared as he put together the lyrics for the song. "What unfolds on TV or on the Internet, it's never really that. You think it is but it's just not," he says. "When you have a stage like Kelly has, you should talk about that part of your life. I think Kelly's way deeper than that."
Talk a Good Game is scheduled to hit stores on June 18. She kicks off a tour in St. Paul, Minnesota next Thursday, and will be co-headlining with The-Dream over the course of the next six weeks.
