Supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, broke out into chants at his Michigan rally mocking former President Donald Trump's false claims about Haitian immigrants eating pets.

The vice presidential nominee put Trump's recent debate performance on blast Thursday at his rally in Grand Rapids, as reported by The Independent.

"He said a lot of weird stuff too, so I'm just going to say that," he told the crowd. "You tell me that you had this on your bingo card: 'And they're eating cats.'"

Chants of "We don't eat cats!" proceeded to echo through the crowd as Walz looked on. He responded, "Ah, Michigan, we love you."

Trump's claim at the debate, which was originally sparked on social media, was flagged as false by the debate moderators as well as local officials.

"A mark of true leadership is not who beats people down, it's who lifts people up. When there's a bully and it's time to, she can beat a bully down. But for the American people, she laid out a plan for an opportunity economy," Walz said, referring to Harris' suggested plans for a federal ban on price gouging and more tax credits for first-time homebuyers, as reported by the Detroit Free Press.

The Minnesota governor added, "Screaming about eating cats is not a solution."

Michigan is expected to be an important swing state this fall. Recent polls by RealClear Polling show Harris narrowly ahead of Trump by not even a full point.
