After some of the Twitter users attacked Kamala Harris for not mentioning veterans in her Memorial Day weekend tweet, the Vice President paid tribute to them in another message.
Honoring the fallen service members on Sunday, Harris wrote, "Throughout our history our service men and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country. As we prepare to honor them on Memorial Day, we remember their service and their sacrifice."
This comes a day after she shared a photo of herself smiling and writing, "Enjoy the long weekend."
Though it looked like a positive message, it wasn't taken well by her followers on Twitter.
One wrote, "Why did you post a pic of yourself like this Rolling on the floor laughing & not even mention the REASON we celebrate. Shameful."
Another commented, "I know you think the 'long weekend' is a chance to post a pic of yourself and get some mimosas as you plan to rip our country apart but it’s actually a time to appreciate the brave soldiers who died for our country & to reflect on the LIFETIME their families spend without them."
Another reminded her the significance of the day. "Memorial Day is a day to remember our fallen soldiers who died in defending our freedoms...your tweet is an insult all those service men and women who paid the ultimate price. #KamalaHarrisHatesAmerica," read the tweet.
On Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May annually, the men and women who have died while serving in the US military are honored.
Harris delivered a speech at a commencement ceremony for graduates at the US Naval Academy on Friday, reported Fox News. "It has forever impacted our world," she said while talking about the pandemic. "It has forever influenced our perspective, and if we weren’t clear before, we know now: Our world is interconnected. Our world is interdependent, and our world is fragile."
"This, midshipmen, is the era we are in, and it is unlike any era that came before," Harris added.
But she surprised many when she joked about Naval electrical engineers creating green energy. "Just ask any Marine today, would she rather carry 20 pounds of batteries or a rolled-up solar panel, and I am positive she will tell you a solar panel, and so would he," she said, before laughing.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the White House issued a proclamation about Memorial Day. It was signed by President Joe Biden, reported New York Post.
“Our Nation will never forget the courage and patriotism demonstrated by the countless women and men who laid down their lives so that we may continue to pursue a more perfect Union and to protect the unalienable rights Americans hold dear,” read a part of the proclamation.
