Jonathan Price, 31, met with an untimely death on Saturday night after trying to break-up what seemed like an ugly brawl in Wolfe City, 65 miles away from Dallas. As per the eye-witnesses, Price seemed to have intervened in an altercation at a gas station that was on the verge of turning violent. Price, a resident of Texas, was first tased at by a cop before being shot.
Just as soon as the news of Price’s death surfaced, authorities on Sunday stated that the cop involved was placed on administrative leave. The officials refused to divulge further details about the Texas shooting.
Often hailed as a “pillar of the community”; the former athlete was employed and also worked as a fitness expert on the side. “Everybody loved Jonathan. Everybody. Black, white, Mexican, it doesn’t matter,” said April Louis, Price’s sister to the outlet.
Price’s mother, Marcella Louis, albeit distraught by the turn of events, was proud of her son. “That’s what he always did, tried to help others. I taught him that all the years,” she said.
Another witness came forth and gave her stance about Price, and what a big loss it was to the community. “We all love him and think so highly of him and just the nicest guy you could ever meet,” Kyla Sanders told the TV-station.
While Price's death is currently perceived as an act of police brutality, Philadelphia-based civil rights lawyer Lee Merritt said he is working with the family to ensure that they “get justice” for “a hometown hero.” As far as the attorney’s understanding goes, he claimed: “Police fired tasers at him and when his body convulsed from the electrical current, they ‘perceived a threat’ and shot him to death.”
A volley of friends dropped their condolences to the family on social media. “Motivational speaker, trainer, professional athlete, and community advocate— he was dearly loved by so many,” Merritt wrote on Facebook. “He noticed a man assaulting a woman and he intervened. When police arrived, I’m told, he raised his hands and attempted to explain what was going on,” he added.
As per recent reports, the family is likely to hold a vigil for Price on Monday evening.
