Did you ever sit in the back of your lecture hall and text your friends, play Candy Crush, and just down-right ignore everyone word babbling out of your professors mouth? Well, apparently that’s how John McCain became a US Senator. The Maverick has been ignoring important lectures, speeches and meetings for years! McCain was recently caught by a Washington Post photographer as he unknowingly gambled away during a Senate meeting regarding U.S. military action in Syria. And while people are claiming he had already made up his mind on the matter, and can do as he pleases, we are not so convinced.

Remember back in 2012, when McCain couldn't keep his eyes open during that silly State of Union address? But now as I look back at the footage of a seemingly sleepy McCain, I have noticed something else, the flicker of an eyelid, The New York Times defended the maverick Republican from Arizona and 2008 presidential hopeful, stating that he could very well be reading a copy of the speech in his lap. But to me it looks like he is squinting at an iPhone screen in the middle of an intense poker game, am I right? McCain’s been playing poker on his smartphone during meetings for years!

Well, alright, I don’t certainly know what McCain does in every Senate meeting, but this is outrageous. It’s rather offensive that McCain can justify his actions of playing a video game while Senate debates whether the U.S. should presumably enter into another war. America’s senior foreign policy and military officials gathered and made a case for the use of U.S. military force against the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, however McCain was busy playing poker. The photo discreetly snapped by David Beard has been making the rounds after being posted to Twitter with the caption, “Yes, that is @SenJohnMcCain playing poker on his iPhone. Hero!”

Merely minutes after Beard’s post, McCain took to his own Twitter account, we are assuming on his iPhone, and wrote, “Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing-worst of all I lost!” McCain’s humorous tweet was an attempt to save face, but honestly the defensive tone only made it worse.

Indicating that a Senate meeting lasts 3+ hours, seemed like an attempt by McCain to justify his distracted behavior. Interestingly enough, 3 hours is not a long of a meeting, and to mock a watchdog-esque story of himself showed his overall lack of seriousness and focus at a rather vital time for the U.S. It is jarring that he cannot be engaged during presentations from Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey, but has already firmly made up his mind to back Obama and his request for the authorization to bomb Syria.

Now, I am certainly not saying that no one ever gets distracted or has a tough day at work, I understand that. But at such a critical time for our country, with McCain stating that if we don’t take action, “there would be not only implications for this president, but for future presidencies as well,” shouldn't he be fully engaged and alert, listening to every side of the debate and gathering as much information as possible to make an informed decision? What do you think, are you offended that McCain was playing poker on his iPhone during a Senate meeting or not?
