John Cena beat Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Sunday night, winning both the WWE title as well as the event, Wrestlemania 29. Following an opening video message by Governor Chris Christie, R-N.J. to the packed crowd at MetLife Stadium in Bergen County, N.J., Cena laid smackdown on The Rock. At the end of the fierce fight, John Cena applied his signature "attitude adjustment" finisher, lifting The Rock over his head after Johnson had been weakened somewhat, leaning sideways to throw his balance off, and throwing The Rock to the mat.
John Cena then applied pressure to The Rock's leg as Cena pinned him. The referee appeared in the center of the mat, and tapped The Rock out.
However, despite the aggression shown by two of the WWE Wrestmania 29 participants, John Cena and Dwayne Johnson were cordial to each other at the close of the event, as there were hints of another future rematch.
Some controversy arose in some quarters regarding John Cena beating Dwayne Johnson in Wrestlemania 29. Doug Kyed pointed out that Johnson will be departing the WWE for some time again as he prepares to film another movie. The Easton, Pa.-native wrestler turned actor will be starring in "Hercules: The Thracian Wars" soon, alongside Ian McShane.
Fans have yet to see whether this is the last clash of the non-football Giants in East Rutherford, or if the two will meet again in the future. While Sunday's battle between John Cena and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson at Wrestlemania 29 may now be at the top of many WWE fans' lists, here are four other memorable examples of John Cena adjusting the attitudes of his rivals:
John Cena joined forces with "The Miz" to become WWE Tag Team champions in February 2011. The duo defeated wrestlers Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel, however, following the tag team, "The Miz" challenged John Cena following a WWE official requiring Slaer and Gabriel to execute their "rematch clause" in both their contracts. At the "Extreme Rules" match that year, John Cena won the title of WWE Champion.
In 2004, Cena defeated "Big Show" to become the US Champion at that year's Wrestlemania. Most recently, in the midst of a feud between John Cena and The Rock, the two faced off previously in 2012 at WrestleMania, Cena lost to Johnson. However, some may see that loss as a win for John Cena, as it created quite the yearlong lead-up to what was a memorable win at Wrestlemania 29 on Sunday in New Jersey.
