John Brennan has been confirmed to be the new director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The final vote, which ignored party lines, was 63-34, with Democrats Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Frank R. Lautenberg, D-N.J., not voting.
Kentucky Republican Rand Paul, the most outspoken opponent to Brennan's nomination was joined in his 'nay' vote by Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders, a hero of the progressive movement, and a number of other representatives of both parties.
On the other side, Republican Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who voiced his displeasure with Paul's recent filibuster, voted to confirm Brennan. Graham was one of thirteen republicans to join a majority of democrats to approve the nomination.
Brennan will succeed Gen. David Petraeus as CIA Director, with acting director Michael Morrell reinstated in his previous role as deputy director.
