Jodi Arias' defense team is seeking to bar live TV coverage of the sentencing trial. The Jodi Arias case had been at the front of the news channels since it began earlier this year. The nation tuned in to watch the beautiful, young, Latina testify on her own behalf. Arias tried to convince the jury she killed her one time boyfriend out of self-defense and not cold blood. The jury spent months listening to testimony from Arias, her family, forensic experts, medical examiners and countless others. On May 8, 2013 the jury found Arias guilty of the first degree murder of Travis Alexander.
Jodi Arias kept herself in the spotlight as much as she could during her murder trial. After the verdict was read the first thing Arias did was an interview with Arizona media. Arias said she was surprised at the verdict and also said she hoped the jury would come back and sentence her to death. Arias said to her death was freedom. When it came time to speak in front of the jury before they deliberated her fate, Arias changed her mind and asked for life so that her family would not be hurt anymore.
From opening statements to closing arguments and everything in between and after the Jodi Arias case has been covered live by news organizations. Media outlets like CNN are fighting the request made by the defense to bar live TV coverage of Arias' sentencing hearing. After her conviction the jury could not decide whether or not Arias deserved the death penalty for her crime. A new jury will be sworn in to make a decision on either life in prison or the death penalty. Lawyers for CNN have argued that Arias brought all of the public's attention on herself.
Lawyers say it would not be fair to keep the public from witnessing the end to the saga. An attorney for CNN, David Bodney spoke to the judge at a hearing on Friday saying "[Arias] has voluntarily thrust herself into the vortex of this public controversy. It is unfair to deprive the public...because someone can't control her own speech." Arias attorney's feel that the enormous public attention that Arias received during her murder trial will also be cast upon her during the sentencing phase. The defense feels the attention will get in the way of her having a fair trial the second time around.
Lawyers for Jodi Arias are also looking to have the courtroom venue changed and get the case heard outside of the Phoenix area. Lawyers are concerned about the venue the same way they are concerned about the media. The feel all of the attention will hinder Arias' chances at a fair and impartial trial. The defense also wants the Twitter handles of the jurors that will decide the fate of Jodi Arias. The defense says they want to make sure jurors will not be able to communicate about the case. With the help of a third party Jodi Arias was able to Tweet during her trial and continues to tweet today.
