Jennifer Marie Vargas, a 34-year-old mother in San Antonio, Texas, is accused of ripping her 6-year-old son's scrotum and bruising his penis because she was angry with him, and then using superglue to try repair her son's genital area. The FBI charged Vargas on Wednesday after investigators said she grabbed the boy by his private parts and pulled with enough force to open a 4-centimeter laceration on his scrotum. She allegedly cleaned the wound with alcohol and then applied the adhesive. "She applied superglue to the (boy's) scrotum until the bleeding stopped, stuffed his underwear with paper towels, and then told him to go to bed," a criminal complaint affidavit said. "Vargas did not seek any type of medical treatment for the child."

The boy's father, U.S. Army Specialist Samuel Simpson, returned home to discover his son in a bedroom crying with a bloody tissue in the boy's underwear and severe injuries, including the laceration on the scrotum and bruising in the penis area. He took the boy to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, where doctors examined and medicated him due to the extreme pain and later took him into surgery to repair the damage, the affidavit said. He is recovering from surgery and remains in his father's custody. Since the family lived at the San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston joint base, the mother is being charged with assault within maritime and territorial jurisdiction resulting in serious bodily injury, and faces up to 10 years in prison.

Judge Pamela Mathy ordered Vargas held without bail pending an Oct. 28 bail hearing. Prosecutors are expected to argue that she remain behind bars. Federal investigators said they are looking at previous states where the couple lived to see if there have been any prior interactions with child protection agencies in the past. However, according to Child Protective Services spokeswoman Mary Walker, "We have not dealt with this family before."
