Doris Roberts, who we all knew as Marie from the sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond,” has passed away according to TMZ. Roberts died on Sunday in Los Angeles at 90 years old.
She is survived by her son, Michael Cannata Jr., who she had with her first husband Michael Cannata. They divorced in 1962 and she later married William Goyen in 1963 until his death from leukemia in 1983. Roberts also has three grandchildren: Kelsey, Andrew, and Devon.
She won five Emmy Awards, four of them for “Everybody Loves Raymond” in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005. Roberts joined the show in 1995, playing Ray Romano’s mother and Peter Boyle’s character’s wife. She remained with the CBS sitcom for the show’s nine seasons, appearing on 210 episodes. Her other Emmy Award was from her stint on “St. Elsewhere” in 1983.
Besides her role on “Raymond,” Roberts was also known for playing Donna Pescow’s mother on the ABC series “Angie,” from 1979 to 1980; and Mildred Krebs on NBC’s “Remington Steele,” the receptionist for the detective agency ran by Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist.
However, her career began in 1952, with a role on the TV series “Studio One.” She also appeared in episodes of “The Naked City” (1958-1963), “Way Out” (1961) and “The Defenders” (1962-1963). Roberts made her film debut appearing in “Something Wild” in 1961. That filmed opened up Roberts’ door to Hollywood, with stints on 1960s and 1970s films as “A Lovely Way to Die ,” “No Way to Treat a Lady ,” “The Honeymoon Killers ,” “Such Good Friends ,” “Little Murders ,” and “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three .”
In 1978, she appeared in a film about John F. Kennedy's assassination, “Ruby and Oswald ,” in which she played Jack Ruby's sister. She also appeared very briefly in “The Rose ,” as the mother of the title character played by Bette Midler. Other titles where Roberts appeared include the TV movie remake of “If It's Tuesday, It Still Must Be Belgium” (1987) and the “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation ” (1989).
She also appeared on “Alice, ” “Barney Miller ” and on “Full House ” as Danny Tanner's mother, Claire. She played the unhinged Flo Flotsky on four episodes of “Soap ,” Dorelda Doremus, a faith healer, on “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman ,” and lonely Aunt Edna on “Step by Step .” Other credits to her name include “Lizzie McGuire ,” “Our House,” “Grandma's Boy ,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent ,” “Play the Game ,” “Aliens in the Attic ,” “Madea's Witness Protection,” and “The Middle .”
