Jennifer Lopez has been making some buzz for her refusal to stop using pelts. In an age of ethical fashion where most artists have given up their fur outfits out of respect for the environment, there’s still no stopping Lopez from wearing fur.
Lopez is undoubtedly one of the most successful artists of her generation. Having carved herself a stellar career in the entertainment industry, J.Lo certainly has all the money to buy herself expensive fur outfits. However, considering the increasing number of major name designers ditching fur for being environmentally unethical, many find it odd that Lopez still insists on wearing fur.
Among the major designers that have given up fur are Armani, Versace, Chanel and Gucci. These top brands are one with animal rights groups in making strides toward sustainability. Wearing fur coats is not a sustainable practice because it usually takes up to 20 foxes to make a basic fur coat. Add the train and hood, that’s more than 20 foxes.
When Lopez took the stage recently for her “It’s My Party Tour,” she wore a full-length gold fox fur coat made by Fur Salon of Saks Fifth Avenue. Since coats like that easily accumulate makeup and perspiration even if worn for just a few moments on stage, Lopez usually wears two different fur coats each time she performs.
Each coat that Lopez wears during her concerts costs approximately $27,500. That means if she wears two pieces of fur coats for every performance, she spends at least $55,000 for her fur outfits alone.
Aside from the fact that fur coats are not environment friendly and are costly, they don’t fit the current weather in most parts of America. Many find it odd that Lopez keeps on wearing fur coats during her ongoing “It’s My Party Tour” when it’s mid-summer in the country. In fact, America is experiencing heatwave, so even her legion of fans can’t help but wonder why she’s still doing it.
“Fur … is fabulous at keeping out snow, sleet and sub-zero conditions but is hard to dance in, tends to shed and would be none too happy after a spin in a washing machine,” noted New York Post. “A habitual fur wearer, she (Jennifer Lopez) seems more concerned about looking rich than being relevant.”
