Jay-Z's new album "Magna Carta Holy Grail", his 12th studio LP, has leaked online ahead of its official UK release on July 7. It comes out on July 9 in the US. The UK's Metro wrote on Thursday that the album had been made available on the Internet for illegal download. The leak occurred after the crash of the Samsung app, which gave away the album for free to some 1 million owners of the Samsung Galaxy S4, S3 and Note 2 handsets on the 4th of July. Many fans reported having trouble downloading the Magna Carta app. Others complained that the exclusive free version they had downloaded was a clean edit of the album rather than the uncensored version, which they will have to buy. Listen to "Holy Grail", a song with Justin Timberlake from the new album, below.
Other guests on "Magna Carta Holy Grail" reportedly include Nas, Beyoncé, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell and Timbaland - all of these on a single song titled "BBC", in what is being described as an old-fashioned "posse cut" - as well as Rick Ross and Frank Ocean.
In a review of the album, USA Today writes that it was "worth the wait", adding, "With platinum status guaranteed even before his album goes on sale July 9, he could have just mailed it in. But he stays on top, because he refuses to do anything less than epic."
One of the songs, "Jay-Z Blue", explores the topic of fatherhood. Jay-Z, 43, and singer Beyoncé are the parents of a 18-month-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. In a Samsung advertisement for the album, he says of her, "[She's] something that we both created. We still marvel at her."
"My pop left when I was young, so ... he didn't teach me how to be a man nor how to raise a child or treat a woman."
In another Samsung ad, Jay-Z says of the album, "It's about this duality of, how do you navigate your way through this whole thing, through success, through failure, through all of this, and remain yourself?" The rapper adds: "We don't have any rules, everybody is trying to figure it out. That's why the internet is like the Wild West. We need to write the new rules."
According to Digital Spy, it was recently confirmed that the collection will be certified platinum upon on its release, after the Recording Industry Association of America altered its rules to allow digital sales to be instantly certified.
