Something tells us that Gael Garcia Bernal and Jonás Cuarón is the new bromance in town and their new feature together can prove it! Cuarón, son of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) has invited his colleague and friend to join him once more in his upcoming flick titled "Z," ---a reboot of the classic movie "The Mask Of Zorro" released in 1998 and starring Antonio Banderas. In this reboot, Gael will take the lead as the beloved masked swashbuckler.
According to Deadline, who announced the exciting news, the featured film is being done as a co-production between Lantica Pictures and Mark Amin’s Sobini Films.
“I have always loved Gael for this role,” said Amin to Deadline. “Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.”
After making his directorial debut with the premiere of impacting film "Desierto," also starring the Golden Globe-winning actor, Cuarón will give a twist to the traditional "Zorro" tale in the forthcoming "Z" movie. The Mexican filmmaker, along with Lantica Media and Sobini Films, is expected to give a futuristic take on the iconic story. "Z" will be financed by Lantica Media and sold internationally by Pantelion Films at the upcoming Cannes film market.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lantica was previously reworking on a Zorro reboot but Cuarón had the idea to start from scratch and write new material. THR reports that the forthcoming film "will no longer be post-apocalyptic but set in the near future." Despite its new twist, the flick with conserve its essence: "a masked, caped stranger taking on tyrants."
Cuarón's debut film as director in "Desierto" won the International Critics’ Award at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival. He also co-wrote "Gravity" with his dad.
