After many years of doing theater in Mexico for plays such as "Aladdin" and "Hook," Jaime Camil will finally make his debut on Broadway. The Mexican actor almost had his first taste of Broadway in 2005, when he was the first Mexican to be part of the original "The Mambo Kings" cast. However, the musical never made it to New York. Now, 11 years later, the actor re-embarks his journey to Broadway, calling it "an amazing opportunity."
Camil, who stars as Rogelio de la Vega (Gina Rodriguez's TV dad) on "Jane The Virgin," has landed the role of a lifetime as the gallant Mr. Billy Flyn in the smash hit “Chicago" and Broadway's longest-running American musical.
"Musical theater is one of, if not my biggest, passions. If I had to put in order what I love to do the most, it would be musical theater, movies and then television," Camil said in an exclusive interview with Latin Billboard. "This opportunity comes in a perfect time, because I had just told my wife that I needed to go back onstage and remind myself why I love to act. And now, life, God and the universe have granted me this precious gift, which is to be on a Broadway show."
Camil, who is substituting for actor Ryan Silverman, told Billboard that he is planning to incorporate new qualities in the role, such as adding a bit more of comedy. "Not only do I want to be this slick lawyer who never loses a case and is a smooth talker, but also find a way where he gets to have fun. In some of the punch lines, I'm taking them a step further into the comedic side but still, of course, respecting the character," he stated.
Ad for his return to Broadway taking a bit longer than expected, Camil says it was worth the time! "I just recently watched the musical and it is so powerful and solid. The cast is so tight and the ensemble is just incredible. It's a show that relies on the human talent, on it's performers," he told Billboard.
Camil is et to take the stage for five weeks (unless it gets extended further) from from May 31 to July 3.
