An incarcerated South Carolina man's booby-trapped home claimed the life of a relative who stopped by to check on the place, according to authorities.

Jordon Dove, 34, went to check on the home of Alfonzo Brown who was incarcerated out of state. When Dove attempted to open the back door of the residence, he was hit by a shotgun blast, Calhoun County Sheriff's police said.

Dove initially survived but later succumbed to his wounds. Police arrived and carefully approached the home.

"It was believed at that time, the residence may have been booby trapped. A perimeter was set up around the residence as deputies slowly made entry into the home," police stated

They found the shotgun rigged to go off should someone attempt to open the back door. The front of the home was barricaded to prevent anyone from entering, police said.

"He had taken a shotgun and screwed it to a stud in the wall and had it aimed towards the door. And then he had for lack of a better term a pipe pressed up against the trigger wedged into the door and the door opened inwards so when you opened it, it pushed the trigger and fired the blast," Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers told WIS-10.

The station reported that Brown was being held in Maryland for his alleged involvement in a non-deadly triple shooting.

"This is my opinion; he knew the crime he was going to commit when he left here and went to Maryland; he knew he would be on the run; he knew that he would be tracked back to Calhoun County; he knew that we would be coming out to get him, and I think he set it up for us," Summers told WIS-10.

Summers stated that charges against Brown are forthcoming.
