"The Gang" of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has returned for its ninth season of sociopathy with cast members Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito. On Wednesday, September 18, all-new episode 3 of this season, titled "The Gang Tries Desperately To Win An Award", will be airing. The show's website summarizes the action thusly: "Tired of failing to be recognized for their years of service in the bar industry, the gang changes their ways to give the patrons what they think they want."
Last week saw Frank (Danny DeVito) appearing on local Philadelphia television to tout the benefits of gun ownership in "Gun Fever Too: Still Hot". That included him waving around his two guns on air as he told a newswoman about how he managed to scare off would-be muggers ("I don't know if they wanted money, or they wanted something more sexual", he tells her) as the rest of the gang watches live at Paddy's Pub. That sparks heated debate between two separate camps within the gang: Dennis (Glenn Howerton) and Dee (Kaitlin Olson) are appalled by how easy it is for people to own guns, while Charlie (Charlie Day) and Mac (Rob McElhenney) are all up in arms about the government's meddling with the rights of Philadelphians to bear arms.
If you consider yourself a big "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" fan, you have some serious competition to head off. Kaitlin Olson told Metro Entertainment recently about a particular expression of fan appreciation that most would probably think excessive. "The weirdest thing is people getting our [five] faces tattooed on their bodies. And it's not just one or two, it's happened, like, a big handful of times. And I am shocked every single time. People will tweet us pictures." She went on to advise people against doing it, saying, "The show is going to end one day. And that body will - hopefully - be around for a very long time."
Glenn Howerton has said that Season 9 will include episodes about Thanksgiving, "Lethal Weapon 6," and a flu epidemic. One of them, titled "Flowers for Charlie", will also be written by "Game of Thrones" co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. "It's kind of like 'Limitless,' where I'm taking a pill to be more smarter," Charlie Day said of that episode at the end of July. All-new episodes will be airing every Wednesday night. You can catch "The Gang Tries Desperately To Win An Award" tonight at 10 p.m. on FXX, the new basic cable entertainment sister channel of FX.
