Rumors suggest that the iPhone 6 release date is slated for September 2014. According to the latest leaks from CNBeta, the 4.-7-inch iPhone 6 will boast a new A8 processor, which is essentially the A7 dual-core processor clocked at a higher frequency. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is also expected to offer a generous 64GB internal storage memory, a feature that some believed would only be available in the phablet-sized 5.5-inch iPhone 6.
With a bigger screen, faster processor, and more internal storage, the new iPhone 6 is shaping up to be a really attractive package. However, how does the new iPhone 6 compare to the current champ, the Samsung Galaxy S5?
Even though the screen size from iPhone 5S to iPhone 6 has taken a major leap from a 4-inch screen to a 4.7-inch screen, the current Samsung Galaxy S5 is still well ahead with a dazzling 5.1-inch display. In fact, even the old Samsung S III featured a sharp HD Super AMOLED 4.8-inch display. According to industry observers, Samsung has already reached its maximum acceptable dimensions and will face minimal increases in size. Meanwhile, Apple’s latest dual iPhone 6 approach allows the company to test the waters with a monstrous 5.5-inch display. Future iPhone designs could even feature an edge-to edge display, effectively eliminating any visible bezel surrounding the phone. Until that happens, Samsung’s display is the winner in our books.
Next, we compare performance. The iPhone 6 will have a 2GHz dual-core 20nm A8 CPU. This is the very first Apple iPhone chipset to reach the 2GHz milestone. What’s more, it’s 64-bit processor makes it just as fast as desktop-grade processors. The U.S. spec Samsung S5 features a quad-core snapdragon 801 processor. The amazing 2.5 GHz chip runs the 4.4.2 KitKat OS with ease. Unlike the iPhone’s A8 processor, the snapdragon 801 is a 32-bit chip.
Battery-wise, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is rumored to have a 1,800 mAh battery pack while the 5.5 inch iPhone will reportedly have a 2,500 mAh battery. On paper, the Samsung S5 has both models beat! The Galaxy S5 has a large 2800 mAh battery. This is a perfect examplle of how Apple's sleek and thin design can also become its downfall when it comes to battery life.
Although the great hardware really plays to the Samsung Galaxy S5’s strengths, it’s cheap plasticky design looks to be a mild carry-over from the Galaxy S4. What’s more, gorgeous all-aluminum designs from Apple and even HTC make the Galaxy S5 look downright outdated. The new Apple iPhone 6 is expected to push the envelope in aesthetics even further with new materials including the highly anticipated Sapphire display. The final piece to the puzzle will be the pricing strategy of the iPhone 6. Official pricing have not been released but speculators expect the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to be priced around $800. The top-of-the-line iPhone 6 5.5-inch phablet will cost around $1000. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S5 currently commands around $700. However, a price drop is highly probable upon the launch of the iPhone 6.
