Prison breaks have become a sudden plague for nine Interpol member countries in just one month, including Pakistan, Libya and Iraq. The international police organization has issued a wordlwide security alert Saturday after the mass escapes of terror suspects potentially allied with al-Qaeda. The alert requests the aid of the 190 member countires in finding the suspects, USA Today reported.
This announcement arrived the day after the U.S. issued an international travel alert due to al-Qaeda terrorists threats, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, Yahoo News reported. This month's activity has resulted in thousands of potential terror suspects escaping prisons. The Interpol and State Department warnings may be connected as Interpol referenced the Department's closings, saying it would be "prioritizing all information and intelligence in relation to the breakouts or terrorist plots." Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin E. Dempsey said in an interview with ABC News that intelligence regarding terror plots have become more specific than in previous occurrences.
"There's a significant threat stream, and we're reacting to it," he said.
