The Jorabagan police are facing heavy criticism for not acting immediately on a missing person report involving a nine-year-old girl in Kolkata. Such resulted in the gruesome death of the child who was found lying in a pool of blood on the staircase leading to the terrace of a residential building.
According to police, the minor was first sexually abused and then killed. The girl, whose identity remains unknown, went missing Wednesday evening. Authorities claim that girl was sexually abused, thrashed and strangled before her throat was slit by a person or a group of persons, NDTV reported.
"It seems that the culprits were known to the minor victim... that is why they killed her after abuse," Jorabagan police senior police official Murlidhar Sharma said in a statement after they rushed to the area in the northern part of the city after the body was discovered.
Police were also able to recover a couple of teeth and some hair strands on the staircase. A blood-stained wife was also retrieved, found from a drain just beside the building.
"Going by the circumstantial evidence, we suspect that the culprit or the culprits knew the locality well. We are probing the matter. Sniffer dogs have been employed to help with the probe," Sharma added.
The whole thing did not sit well with locals who felt the police took their time before acting on the missing person report. They are also seeking justice for the unfortunate plight of the girl.
"The family had approached the police when the girl went missing last evening. But they did not cooperate. Had they searched the locality, the girl could have been saved. Their casual attitude is responsible for this," one unidentified local quipped.
Despite the controversy surrounding their actions, police are now talking to local children who were playing around the area on Wednesday. Forensic experts were able to collect samples from the crime scene. The body of the child has already been sent for post mortem, Pehal News reported.
