The Ides of March is a day on the Roman Calendar that corresponds to March 15. This day became notorious for the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The death of Caesar made Ides of March a turning point in history. This was one of the events that marked the transition from the historical period known as the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.
March is the third month of the Julian calendar but in the oldest Roman calendar it was the first month of the year. The Romans did not number days of the month from the first to the last day. They counted back from three points of the month. The Nones, The Ides and The kalends. The Ides were determined by the full moon.
