In a sit-down interview with Newsmax's Greg Kelly, President Donald Trump reflected on the attempt on his life last year, revealing that he still feels a "throbbing feeling" in his ear from the attack.
"If you think about it, I shouldn't be here right now," Trump said Tuesday night, recounting the moment he narrowly avoided a direct hit. "I have sons that are great shots—they said it's not possible to miss from that distance. Now, it wasn't a complete miss. I still get that little throbbing feeling, but had I not turned away at that very, very, very instant, I wouldn't be here sitting with you."
Trump acknowledged the "great support" he has received, crediting divine intervention for his survival. "I think, you know, somebody said that God saved me in order to save this country."
To highlight his point, the president argued that the United States was on the brink of collapse before his re-election, likening the state of the nation to "Venezuela on steroids."
Earlier in the interview, Trump addressed concerns about changes to social security, claiming he was focused on preventing illegal immigrants from collecting social security, though no evidence suggests undocumented migrants access social security.
The president also criticized the Biden administration's policies. "Who would allow transgender for everybody? Who would allow open borders?" he asked, condemning border policies that he said allowed "every jail all over the world ... to be emptied out into our country."
Despite the challenges, Trump was optimistic about reversing what he sees as the country's decline. "Now we're turning it around," he assured Kelly.
