Several lots of certain varieties of Eukanuba and Iams dry foods for dogs and cats have been recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, Procter & Gamble and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
Routine testing determined some of the pet food made during a 10-day period, with expiration dates during November 2014, could have been contaminated. Procter & Gamble said the recall was "a precautionary measure" and that no wet food or pet treats were affected, they added that all retailers have been notified and are working to remove the products.
No illnesses have been reported, P&G said, however, pet owners should be aware for common symptoms. Salmonella infected pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans, the company said.
"Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products," P&G said in a statement, according to ABC News.
