Queen Elizabeth gave Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton very different treatments when they first joined the royal family. Perhaps due to the Duchesses' different backgrounds, Her Majesty wanted to immediately show Prince Harry’s wife the ropes after the royal couple tied the knot.

According to royal expert Angela Levin, the Queen invited the Duchess of Sussex to go on a solo outing with her in June 2018. This means that Markle had only been married to Prince Harry for a month when she traveled to Cheshire with Her Majesty.

“The Queen admires the fact that Meghan is self-made and was keen to show her the ropes,” Levin said. The royal expert also noted the fact that the Duchess of Cambridge had to wait much longer before she received a similar invitation from the monarch.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tied the knot in 2011. But the mom of three’s first solo outing with the Queen only took place this year. This means that Prince William’s wife waited eight years before embarking on a tour with Her Majesty.

In 2012, the Queen invited Middleton to join her in Leicester. However, Prince Philip was also with them at that time.

Meanwhile, Markle and the Queen's trip to Cheshire made headlines last year after the former struggled to recall the royal protocol. Before riding the vehicle, Prince Harry’s wife second-guessed if she was supposed to ride the car before or after Her Majesty.

The Queen didn’t seem to mind the confusion. After Markle asked her what she should do, the Queen instructed her granddaughter-in-law to ride the car before her. This way, she would be able to get off the vehicle before the Duchess of Sussex.

Markle and the Queen were also photographed laughing hysterically during last year’s outing. Levin said that this was a clear indication that the two female royals had a blast while in Cheshire. And for their first royal engagement together, Her Majesty also lent Markle a pair of diamond pearl earrings to make the event more memorable.
