Princess Diana and Elton John were once good friends. But the two high-profile personalities had a falling out after the Princess of Wales refused to attend an event hosted by the singer.

Several years after Princess Diana died, the “Candle In The Wind” singer disclosed the real reason why he and the royal stopped talking for years. He said that he invited the Princess of Wales to an event that supports his AIDS foundation, and she told him that she would come.

But at the last minute, Prince Charles’ ex-wife had a change of heart. John was upset at Princess Diana’s sudden decision to not grace the event, so he wrote her a letter. The mom of two gave the singer a terse response afterward.

John didn’t reveal the contents of his and Princess Diana’s letters to each other. But the late royal’s former butler, Paul Burrell, claimed that his boss got upset after she learned that her photos with Prince William and Prince Harry were printed alongside the pictures of naked men.

Princess Diana agreed to appear in the “Rock And Royalty” book years ago, but she withdrew the permission that she gave to the people behind the publication after learning that nude men were in it as well. By the looks of it, Princess Diana was protecting her reputation and the reputation of her sons.

Meanwhile, the award-winning singer said that it wasn’t really the fact that Princess Diana skipped his event that upset him the most. Rather, he thought that it was strange that Princess Diana didn’t give him a call to tell him that she could no longer make it.

During his appearance on Larry King’s talk show, John said that it seemed as though Princess Diana was too proud to pick up the phone. “That’s how the whole row started and I was relieved when we made it up just before Gianni’s death,” he said.

John and Princess Diana were also good friends with designer Gianni Versace. Following the latter’s assassination, the Princess of Wales finally phoned John to share with him the devastating news. John and Princess Diana attended Versace’s funeral together.
