Prince William was accused of manipulating the media during his split from Kate Middleton years ago. The couple broke up twice during their decade-long relationship, but they eventually decided to tie the knot in 2011.
Royal correspondent Judy Wade previously talked about the royal couple’s split in 2007. She said that the Duchess of Cambridge must have realized how burdensome it could be if she ends up marrying the Duke of Cambridge. Wade also said that marrying someone from the royal family is like having a life sentence.
Fellow royal correspondent Richard Palmer also talked about the royal couple’s second split and said that Prince William must have decided to call it quits to give Kate time to reflect. Dating a future king was not an easy task, and Kate had to deal with the grueling media attention day in and day out.
But even after their split, Palmer revealed that Kate was still photographed wearing the friendship ring that Prince William gave her. This gave royal experts the impression that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s split will only be temporary, and they were right.
“They were very lovey-dovey when they went out for dinner with Hugh and Rose van Cutsem at the King’s Head at Bledington in the Cotswold a couple of weeks ago,” Palmer said at that time. “I’m sure they have split up for now but William’s very good at manipulating the media. This may be about giving her a breather from the royal scene as well as giving him time to go off and do what he wants to do,” he added.
Shortly after William and Kate’s split, the couple decided to get back together. However, the future king still didn’t propose to Kate immediately. The second in line to the throne waited for three more years before he asked for Kate’s hand in marriage.
Prior to their wedding, Prince William released a statement through his spokesman regarding his concerns over how the paparazzi have been harassing his fiancée. He said that Kate, who is a private citizen, should be able to live her life privately. But this changed the minute she wed Prince William.
