Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently hired a new secretary, and they chose the best for the position. It was reported that the royal couple enlisted a former ambassador, Fiona Mcilwham, to be their private secretary.

According to Daily Mail, the search for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s secretary was spearheaded by a group of royal senior staff, which includes their PR chief, Sara Latham. She was said to have helped in choosing the candidates for the shortlist, and in the final interview of Mcilwham, the duke and his wife were present to personally see her qualifications.

It was revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan hired Mcilwham mainly for damage control. The two have been getting a lot of criticisms lately and want to improve their reputation, thus they went hunting for the right person who can help them achieve this goal.

The hiring of the new secretary comes days after Prince Harry and Meghan faced heavy backlash for flying on a luxurious private jet. Town and Country reported that critics have voiced out their views in opposition to the couple’s decision to fly via a private plane when they could have taken a commercial flight.

The magazine mentioned that people are labeling the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as hypocrites because they keep preaching about man’s impact on the environment yet rode a private jet for their vacation. As per The Independent, traveling via a private jet is not exactly environmentally friendly because it burns fuel and emits carbon dioxide.

While the amount of CO2 may be smaller compared to a commercial plane, few people are on board, so it’s less efficient. The magazine added that the personal carbon footprint of passengers who travel in private jets is much higher.

Prior to this incident, Prince Harry and Meghan were also condemned for keeping Archie’s christening private, for spending $3.4 million on the renovation of their Frogmore Cottage and for the duchess’ order to prohibit people from taking photos as she watched the Wimbledon in July. All of these caused uproar since the public claimed that they’re paying taxes for the couple’s expenses too.

The couple wants their public image restored to a healthy level, and hiring the former diplomat might fix their problem. “She (Mcilwham) is the safest pair of hands you can get and that is what the couple really needs right now,” a source told Daily Mail.
