The residents of the United States of America are concerned about the growing disconnect between Trump’s comments on the Coronavirus to that of public health officials.
With the pandemic getting closer to the U.S. soil, Trump’s constant reassurance that the virus is “going away” and very well under control isn’t helping. More so, after Dr. Nancy Messonier, a top U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention expert, alleged that the virus could bring the country’s day-to-day functioning to a screeching halt—affecting schools and businesses—and even warned people to prepare themselves.
Speculations are rife that President Trump’s stance could very well be a strategy to not evoke panic among Americans. But, the differences in the views are alarming, owing to its jarring contradictions. Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, further added that despite strong attempts being made by the U.S. to check the epidemic, it is very unlikely for the nation to be successful at containing it in the long haul.
“We recognize that our very strong measures here in the United States to contain the virus, to keep it limited to very low numbers, may not hold for the long haul,” Schuchat said to a media outlet.
Addressing the same, Trump tweeted shortly after his return to the U.S. from India on Wednesday about summoning a meeting in regards to the same. The U.S. president also maintained that a news conference would be held at the White House at 6 p.m ET.
Up until now, there are 57 recorded cases of coronavirus in the U.S. The virus seems to be spreading at a ferocious pace across Europe and Asia.
However, going by the fast-moving developments; several officials are of the assumption that Trump is downplaying the risk of a growing spreading in the U.S. — a dangerous position for a President who plans on winning a second term. Democrats are of the opinion that the Trump administration appears to be blissfully oblivious to the dangers looming over its head.
In the next couple of days, it is believed that the administration will jump to a more proactive approach, fearing that if the virus spirals out of control, the White House’s reputation will be at stake. As per a recent report, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have records of confirmed cases in six states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, and Wisconsin. Officials have also recorded two cases of 'human-to-human transmission among family members.'
