Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ relationship was not that unique. This is because the royal couple had relatives who shared a similar love story with them.
Before the couple tied the knot, it was reported that Camilla figured out a way to make sure that the future king would be drawn her. In the documentary “Royal Stories: Episode 5 – Camilla Parker Bowles,” it was revealed that the mom of two shared a fascinating story with Prince Charles.
“Camilla apparently captivated Charles by talking about royal mistresses,” the narrator said. “Her great-grandmother Alice Keppel had had an affair with Charles’ great-great-grandfather Edward VII, 73 years earlier. Edward was a serial womanizer with 11 mistresses. Alice, his favorite, was described as having the sexual morals of an alley cat,” the narrator added.
The Duchess of Cornwall’s grandmother tied the knot with George Keppel in 1981 at the age of 23. Alice was known for engaging in multiple affairs with reputable men. Seven years after she tied the knot, she met King Edward VII, and they had an affair together.
Prince Charles’ relative, on the other hand, also had a handful of mistresses. But it has been claimed that Alice was his favorite because she had the ability to help ease his moodiness.
King Edward VII was married to Alexandra of Denmark, and she knew about her husband’s affair and tolerated their relationship. King Edward VII and Alice’s affair lasted until the time of the former’s death in 1910.
Several years later, Prince Charles and Camilla followed in their relatives’ footsteps. The couple got into a relationship in the 1970s, but their bond was short-lived. Years after the heir to the throne and Camilla tied the knot with their respective spouses, they got into an affair with each other.
Princess Diana, the ex-wife of Prince Charles, was also aware of her husband and former friend’s not-so-secret relationship. But unlike Alexandra, the Princess of Wales didn’t give her consent to the couple.
Royal author Jessica Jayne said that Camilla grew up feeling proud that she was related to Alice. “She wasn’t shy about telling her friends about Alice Keppel,” Jayne wrote in the book “The Duchess Of Cornwall: Camilla's Story And Secrets.” “She’d say, ‘My great-grandmother was a lover of the King. We’re practically royalty,’” she added.
