A discouraged homeless man who was ready to die alone is now living a healthy life, after a group of devoted good samaritans found him and restored his hope, organizing a fundraiser that helped him buy a house.
After months of sleeping on Cork city streets, Cian Murtagh, a man who had "given up on life," set out into the countryside in September 2023, planning to end his life alone. However, a dedicated group from Kilbehenny Community Centre in Limerick intervened, launching a widespread search and eventually finding him in need of urgent medical care in Bancha Woods, Tipperary.
While Murtagh recovered in the hospital, he formed a close bond with the Kilbehenny team, who decided to help him secure a stable future. They organized a GoFundMe campaign that quickly went viral, raising over €100,000. The funds have since allowed him to purchase a small cottage in Sligo, where he now resides in a caravan while overseeing renovations with the support of volunteers.
Murtagh expressed his deep gratitude, saying he is "truly grateful to each and every one" who supported his journey from despair to hope. He recently honored those who helped him by lighting a candle for them in Medjugorie, Bosnia, where he was sponsored to visit as part of a pilgrimage CorkBeo reported.
Kilbehenny Community Centre continues to share updates on his story, asking the public to keep spreading his inspiring tale.
