A homeless asylum seeker in the UK deliberately smashed hotel windows in an effort to get arrested and avoid living on the streets, his attorney told a Norwich court.

Farhad Hosnavi, 25, arrived in the UK by boat and had been living in a Norwich migrant hotel until January 2024, when he was caught carrying a knife inside the building, according to the Telegraph.

After serving short jail sentences for two previous window-smashing incidents in April and May of 2024, he found himself homeless and, according to his attorney, committed the latest offense on December 3 in desperation for shelter.

On the day of his most recent release from jail, Hosnavi smashed 14 windows at the hotel, causing £5,000 in damages, or about $6,474, while shouting profanities at the police.

Prosecutors argued that his actions were part of a "continuing campaign" of revenge after his earlier arrest. Hosnavi pleaded guilty to criminal damage, and his sentencing has been postponed until April 30 while the court reviews his asylum application.

Hosnavi is expected to receive another prison sentence, with the judge indicating that only the length of his punishment remains in question.

The 25-year-old's legal status remains uncertain, as deportation is typically only considered for sentences of 12 months or more.
