This week, we reported on how many Latinos hold advanced degrees, the status of Latinas in the U.S. workforce in terms of salary, and the origins of National Taco Day.
While the U.S. Latino population with MBAs and PhDs more than doubled in two decades, access to higher education doesn't reflect the relevance of this population segment in the country, reveals a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.
According to Pew's findings, Latinos with advanced degrees in the U.S. account for "just 8% of all advanced degree holders in the U.S. in 2021." The proportion of Latinos with graduate levels is far below the 19% they represent in the total population, the organization said.
While Latinas are seen as one of the demographic groups driving growth in the U.S. economy, their wage conditions are not improving at the same rate, according to several reports issued this week on the occasion of Latina Equal Pay Day.
This year, Latina Equal Pay Day falls on October 5, a symbolic day because it marks the 22 months for a Latina to work in order to earn what a White, non-Hispanic man earned last year. In fact, Latinas stand to lose more than $1.2 million over a 40 year career due to the staggering wage gap, according to a report by the National Women Law Center.
Tacos are a Mexican delight loved across the U.S. so deeply that there is a National Taco Day.
Oct. 4, 2023, and every other Oct. 4 since 2009, is National Taco Day in the U.S. Although not a federal Holiday, it is on the National Day Calendar's website, and many organizations celebrate it on Oct. 4. Many sources said that National Taco Day started in 2009 from a Del Taco advertisement.
It has been over a year since buses filled with migrants began arriving in Chicago, and the flow is not expected to stop any time soon.
The buses are a part of Texas governor Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star, which claims to be an effort to secure the country's southern border and prevent the "smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas." As part of this operation, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas National Guard gather migrants crossing into the U.S. and shuttle them to sanctuary cities — including Chicago.
To date, over 15,000 migrants have been bussed to Chicago in the past 13 months, according to a letter sent by governor J.B. Pritzker to president Joe Biden. The majority of them have been housed in city-operated shelters; however, many still remain unhoused and have been living and sleeping outside of police stations.
Jaime Florez is a Republican, Hispanic and a communicator, so when the Republican National Committee came knocking on his door with a job offer that checked off all of those boxes, he didn't hesitate.
His role, the RNC's Hispanic Director of Communications, has been gaining electoral relevance along with the increase of the demographic's growth throughout the century. According to a Pew Research Center report, Hispanics were projected to make up 14.3% of eligible U.S. voters in Oct. 2022, a testament to the demographic's rapid growth in the U.S. In 2000, the figure was just 7.4%. About 34.5 million Hispanic Americans will be eligible to vote in the next presidential election.
While the U.S. Latino's economic force grows to represent $3.2 trillion, financial disparities and poor access to traditional banking are still a challenge for many in this 63 million people group, a market opportunity Hispanic-owned fintech seeks to tap into.
According to Lionel Carrasco, a founding partner of h.way, the firm was born to cater to the Latinos' financial needs following a model that offers prosperity while taking into account the cultural nuances of this demography.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to have a format different to any other past editions: according to Conmebol, the South American federation of soccer, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will play a role in a competition that will mostly be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Alejandro Dominguez, president of the regional government body, said that the countries will host inaugural matches in the competition, which will mark the 100th anniversary of its first edition. "The centennial World Cup could not be far from South America, where everything began," he said, in reference to the fact that the first-ever edition was hosted by Uruguay, which then would go on to win the final against Argentina.
