Hip-hop producer AraabMUZIK, whose real name is Abrahan Orellana, is being hospitalized after being shot in what Billboard magazine describes as an attempted robbery. Orellana is from Providence, Rhode Island, though where he was when the incident occurred is at yet unclear. The producer is known in hip-hop literati circles for his wizardry with the MPC drum machine, with production credits including work with rappers Cam'Ron, 50 Cent, Jim Jones, Lloyd Banks, A$ap Mob, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, and a plethora of other high-profile acts.
"Rumors have begun to circulate and first and foremost, we want to let everyone know that AraabMUZIK is currently alive and well," Orellana's team said in a statement. "He was out in his neighborhood last night with friends and unfortunately the victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is recovering now and police are investigating the crime. We appreciate all the concern and fan support and Araab is looking forward to a speedy recovery and returning to the stage as soon as he can."
Other clues to what might have transpired came through a Twitter message from the rapper Avatar Darko, who has worked with Orellana on songs like "Vampire". On Thursday, Darko wrote, "Prey for my bro Araab! He just got shot but he'll be alright! He's strong!" In another tweet he added, "My lil brodi too trill! They tried to rob him and he ain't come up off his sh*t so they tried get him outta there! He meant to be here! Foh!"
Aside from his work with rappers, Orellana has released a number of mixtapes and albums of songs notable for their unorthodox trance-electronica-hip-hop styling. In 2011, Pitchfork Media ranked his album "Electronic Dream" number 40 on their list of the top 50 albums of the year, writing that "a lot of artists tried to make cotton-candy riffs and fist-pumping melodies acceptable in 2011, and AraabMuzik did it transparently enough to make even the staunchest of snobs reconsider aversions to the big and obvious stuff."
The producer also brings his MPC-manhandling act on the road - he has a number of dates set up for the summer, though it's not clear how his injuries might affect them. Below is a full list of tour dates, according to TMZ.
