A 13-year-old girl has been arrested for brutally attacking a 76-year-old woman in her Bronx apartment building lobby and leaving the victim with a broken hip on Sunday, April 3.
The incident reportedly happened while the unidentified 76-year-old victim was returning to her apartment building on Roberts Avenue near Hobart from a night of dancing at Jimmy Ryan’s Bronx Grill and Bar. When the elderly woman entered her building, the teen suspect and two of her accomplices were ready to jump her.
One of the suspects then pulled the victim's hair and proceeded to push their way into the building as the woman tried to close the door on them. Meanwhile, the teen suspect, who was wearing pink leggings during the attack, grabbed the woman by her arm and swung her around until she fell to the lobby floor of her Pelham Bay apartment complex. Following this, the suspect ultimately made off with the woman’s purse, which contained US$50, a wallet, a debit card, and insurance cards, the Daily News reported.
The entire incident was caught on camera by the CCTV surveillance system of the Pelham Bay apartment building. The footage captured the teen suspect and her accomplices attacking the victim, grabbing hold of the elderly woman's purse, and swinging her around until she fell to the floor.
Following the incident, the teen suspect allegedly called 911 to report that she was the victim of an unrelated robbery. Investigators launched an investigation into the incident and identified the underage girl through the disturbing surveillance video which showed the young suspect, and one of her female cohorts, smiling during the heinous attack.
“Detectives from the squad identified her as the person from the video and she immediately asked for a lawyer,” a source said.
Following the brutal attack, the elderly victim, who suffered a fractured hip, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment, New York Post reported.
Meanwhile, after identifying the teen suspect, the officers have charged her with robbery and assault raps as a juvenile and took her to Bronx Family Court. The suspect’s name was not released to the public because of her age.
Meanwhile, the officers stated that they are still looking for the other two suspects. Anyone with information about the teen’s two accomplices is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
