Kidnapping victim Hannah Anderson appeared on NBC's the Today Show and clarified some of the details surrounding her abduction. On August 4 James Lee DiMaggio (now deceased) is alleged to have kidnapped Hannah Anderson. DiMaggio reportedly killed Anderson's mother and eight-year-old brother then set his own house on fire before abducting the girl. An Amber Alert was issued that spanned three states during the week long manhunt. DiMaggio and Anderson were spotted by a group of horseback riders in the deep woods of Idaho. The FBI surrounded the area where the pair was seen then shot and killed DiMaggio.
Hannah Anderson was returned to her father in Southern California after DiMaggio was killed. Reports began to surface about DiMaggio and Anderson's relationship. A schoolmate of Hannah's told local media that DiMaggio had a crush on the 16-year-old. The schoolmate's mother, Angelina Amati then confirmed the crush story when she told reporters Hannah was "creeped out" when DiMaggio admitted his crush. "[Hannah] wouldn't go up there anymore because it was just too awkward between them," said Amati. Hannah and her brother would refer to DiMaggio as "Uncle Jim." DiMaggio and the Anderson family were reportedly close neighbors.
After her rescue Hannah Anderson was referred to as a "victim in every sense of the word" by police. However there have been critics that have spoken out against the girl claiming she knew more about DiMaggio's intentions than she is letting on. Hannah Anderson appeared on the Today Show to silence the critics and give a small account of what happened to her. "In the beginning I was a victim," Anderson said. But now knowing everyone out there is helping me I consider myself a survivor." Anderson told the Today Show "My mom raised me to be strong."
Anderson says she is remembering her brother and mother. Hannah said she showed her support by getting her nails done with the color blue for her brother and oink for her mom. Her toes also have their names written out on the nail. Hannah said her father is the one she leans on now for support. The 16-year-old said she and her father have grown closer. After returning to California with her father, Hannah Anderson took to social media posting pictures and answering questions. When criticized for her actions and questioned about why she went on the web Hannah responded, "I'm a teenager."
"This was a hard time," Anderson said. "And there's going to be harder times in life but if I could get through this I'm sure I can get through a lot more." Anderson will have to put on a brave face in the days to come. Not only will she have to attend the funerals of her mother and brother, but the DiMaggio family is requesting her DNA. In his will James DiMaggio left $112,000 to Hannah and her little brother. The DiMaggio family believes James is Hannah's biological father. The Anderson family says Hannah's mother did not meet James until six-months into her pregnancy with the girl.
