The National Board of Review honored "Gravity" with the Creative Innovation In Filmmaking Award. The film directed by Alfonso Cuarón also placed in the Top 10 of films released in 2013. That list included critical darlings like "12 Years A Slave," "Fruitvale Station" and "Saving Mr. Banks." Spike Jonze and his film "Her" took the awards for Best Director and Best Film, respectively. The nonprofit organization celebrates the unique voices of artists and honor the excellence in film. The Board’s core activities include fostering commentary on all aspects of film production, as well as underwriting educational film programs and seminars for film students. A gala is set to take place January 7 where all the winners will be honored in an event hosted by Lara Spencer.
"Gravity," being one of the most critically acclaimed box office hits of the season has already received an award at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards. Sandra Bullock, the star of the film, took home the Hollywood Actress Award. "Thank to the Hollywood Film Award. I think Hollywood has had a bad rap because the Hollywood I know is thousands and thousands of people that work tireless hours to achieve one goal, which is storytelling," Bullock said during her acceptance speech. "I see so many people in this room that I've worked with who have put me in this place today. The Hollywood I know supported an artist like Alfonso Cuarón and Jonás Cuarón to write a story that they couldn't explain, couldn't show and made no sense to anyone." Other movies that were honored were "Dallas Buyers Club" with awards to Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, an award to Julia Roberts for "August: Osage County" and a special award for a career in Hollywood for Harrison Ford.
With the Award season underway we can expect more victories from the team that was involved in the making of "Gravity" as it is one of the most spectacular movies ever made. The award from the National Board of Review for Creative Innovation In Filmmaking solidifies its stance within this year's crop of movies. The film had to be done with an "out of the box" mindset, despite reporters believing it was actually shot in space. An Oscar nomination should be in the bag with wins projected to be in the special effects and creative categories. Do you think "Gravity" has a shot of winning for Best Movie at the Academy Awards?
