As a little kid, probably when I was 5 or 6, I heard “Pelo Suelto” for the first time. The song had already been a hit a few years back when it came out, but it still remained a popular selection at parties and gatherings. Once the song was over, I remember feeling different. Like something in me had changed for good. It was one of those songs that you knew would stick with you and become sort of like an anthem in your day-to-day life. “I love to let my hair down.” I don’t know why, at age 5 or 6, I understood the real meaning behind those words, the truth of being a free, empowered woman, who follows her heart and ambitions and doesn’t let anyone dictate who she really is. And ever since that moment, Gloria Trevi became a part of my life.

Yes, she had her ups and downs during a highly publicized case that it’s not worth mentioning anymore. But seeing how this woman came from the rubbles and rose like a phoenix to come back into the spotlight, knowing people would still be more interested in her past rather than her present work, says a lot of who she is. She put on a brave face and came back better than ever, gorgeous than ever and more dedicated and passionate than ever. She moved on from the past, met an amazing man and formed a beautiful family. But never putting aside who she is. Never forgetting where she came from and always keeping the same spark and sassiness that has always characterized her.

Today Gloria is touring the major cities of the US, in an amazing show put together with a lot of love, for all of her fans who have remained loyal to her and those new fans who’ve recently discovered Gloria’s greatness. The “Trevinator” is here to stay. Latin Times sat down with her and had a very interesting conversation showcasing all the layers of this performer and once again proving why she has always been such an iconic artist in Latin America and the world.

What made you put together this ambitious tour in the US?

It’s a very intense and beautiful story. I was finishing up a tour in Mexico that did awesome. It was “Agárrate” but my “De Película” album was already out so I was told that we would do a tour in the US to promote the new album. They told me in November, and we were supposed to start the tour in January. And in December there are many people that take time off for the holidays, so I basically said, "Ok, I’ll begin in the US with a tour that’s more like a Gloria Trevi In Concert." And then my husband and everyone who works with me said "You know what? No. If you don’t start with the 'De Película Tour' you’re going to let a lot of valuable time pass, since the record is out." So I began rushing. Christmas was 24 and 25 of December and then it was all work. Everyone involved was working non-stop. Gustavo Mata got involved, who designs all the dancers’ outfits and a lot of my own. I was also working with The Blonds from NYC, who were in the middle of Fashion Week preparation. So I had to "take my whip out" and began putting everything together. And that’s how we managed to create this tour in two months. And people’s reactions are unbelievable. The audience is not the spectator in this show, they’re the protagonists, they’re the stars of the night.

The show is a mega production where fans will enjoy a never before seen Gloria, with your usual spiciness and energy. What inspired you to take on this glamorous and extravagant approach to the “De Película Tour?”

Precisely the album, named “De Película,” inspired this. And the fans. I get a lot fan mail saying, "Gloria, your songs are the soundtrack of my life" and a lot of people see their lives as a movie. We all have songs that put music to our existence. And I said, "This is something beautiful, this is something we need to take to the next level. Make the tour be a movie about the fans’ lives." And it all flowed together in a natural way, nothing was forced.

How would you describe the tour?

This is a passionate and fantastic tour. It has a lot of magic. You will see. I start my concert with a 5-minute act dedicated to action movies. War movies. Because I think there’s always a war between men and women, a love-hate war in a way. So I give it five minutes and there are bombs, and weapons, and in the end they (the men) surrender. Since we are giving it the movie treatment, it’s all very glamorous too.

After all you’ve been through, how would you define the present Gloria Trevi?

I would define myself now, my present, as a movie that’s still being written. I think right now I’m writing a very important and beautiful part of my life. These chapters are about triumph, rediscover new paths, open myself up to new adventures, for example, next week I’m going to be recording an English song, and I couldn’t be more excited! This is a small step of what I want to do in my next record production, and that step will be done with all the passion that characterizes me.

You definitely made a positive impression at the red carpet of “Premio Lo Nuestro.” You looked stunning and everyone was left wondering: What are your beauty secrets?

I think one of the most important tips when it comes to beauty, is love. If you love yourself, and you love life, what surrounds you, if you love what you eat, even the people who attack you, if you love the people who you protect, I feel like you’ll always glow. It doesn’t matter your daily routine. Of course I take care of my skin, my hair, etc. I don’t consider myself an example to other people, but more like a reflection of them. I have that responsibility. There are many women who, like me, have had to get up after a lot of injustices, abuse, and I feel that I have to prove that it’s possible to overcome them.

At the “Premio Lo Nuestro” you performed “No Querías Lastimarme,” how do you feel that the song is still at the top of the charts?

I love that my songs reach number one and all, it’s a nice recognition. But what I love the most, is when my songs become number ones in the people’s hearts.

What message would you give to women who, for some reason, see themselves in situations where they’ve fallen and need to get up but feel like they don’t have the strength?

I love being a woman, and don’t get me wrong with what I’m going to say next because I have a father whom I love, and two beautiful boys and an amazing husband; but people say that man are a little misogynistic, that they have a certain jealousy of women, because they can’t give life like we can. And then they want to say that we’re bipolar. But at least we have a lovable and sweet side, when they’re only thinking about violence. Men make war, not women. The only thing I can say is that I feel extremely happy to be a woman, and that every achievent that we have is as valuable as 3 achievements by men. I’m not a feminist. I’m universal. I believe in gender equality. I hate everything that divides us. There’s a saying that the word ‘devil’ means ‘that who divides.’ And I don’t want to divide men and women, au contraire, I want to bring them together. That everyone realizes how valuable we are. Meanwhile, I think that us women can’t let ourselves fall down. That we’re stronger than we think, and we need to be proud of ourselves. We’re not made by the times we’ve fallen down, but by the times we’ve gotten back up.
