Gina Rodriguez is controversy’s favorite child. Last month, the American actress was in the eye of the storm after dropping the N-word during an Instagram live. Rodriguez was rapping along to a 1996 “Ready or Not” Fugees track when she made mention of the racial slur that got her all the wrath. While she was subjected to a series of hate comments on her IG, the 35-year-old was quick to turn off the comments as things got intense. The actress, who was quick to apologize through a post, gave IG a break.
Despite all the hatred, she was subjected to, Rodriguez sprang back in action on Instagram after a brief lull and posted a picture with her husband, during a stroll in nature. The post was captioned, “Love From Oregon.” Perhaps, this was the actress’ way of diverting the attention from all the derogatory comments being flung at her.
Prior to this incident, Rodriguez came under the radar for repeatedly trying to insert herself and erase the attention surrounding Black issues. From the “All Lives Matter” act to rallying for the Latinx inclusion during the “Black Panther” announcement; the actress’s moves didn’t go unnoticed.
The actress who was shamed online for her racial tendencies made a comment, which indicated that she was subtly trying to divert the attention away from the black community. Throwing in a bit of context, The Hollywood Reporter organized a roundtable discussion about the lack of Black female representation in the movies. A group of people tried to bring forth the issues faced by the actors of color. "Chris Rock talked about how you can go to the movies once a week for many months and never really see a Black woman on-screen in a substantial way," the moderator said. To which Rodrigues was quick to cut through and voice her opinion. “I think that also goes for Latinos as well,” Rodriguez said.
Not too long ago, Rodriguez expressed her disappointment with the pay scale offered to Latinos. “Where white women get paid more than black women, black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and it’s like a very scary space to step into,” she said.
