The Scion FR-S had only reached dealers days ago but the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S tie-up is already a proven success. Right away, automotive publications including Consumer Reports couldn't wait to deliver glowing reports with nothing but great things to say about the sports coupe.
Now, Autocar reports that the critical acclaim has persuaded the Japanese automakers to discuss more future opportunities for joint venture. While an alliance between Toyota and Subaru may seem peculiar at first glance, Toyota actually owns 16.5 percent of Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries. What's more, Toyota is no stranger to automotive bedfellows as it has previously collaborated with the likes of French PSA Peugeot-Citroën to develop the Aygo city car as well as with General Motors in a Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix mash-up.
Speaking to Autocar, GT 86 Development Chief and Toyota Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada said that the automaker is interested in partnering with new companies "if we can jointly produce something exceptional." For now, Toyota Engineers will continue to work beside the specialists at Subaru in developing a convertible version of their rear-wheel-drive sports car. Also, the deal with PSA Peugeot-Citroën will be continued for the next-generation of city cars.
