Subaru has finally announced the development of the car that we've always deserved -- a boundary pushing twin turbo BRZ open top sports car fitted with a diesel hybrid powertrain.
A daring industry first in the convertible segment, a hybrid system is mated to a potent twin-turbo diesel engine promising a combined power output of 400 hp and 550 lb.-ft. of torque. Accelerating from 0-to-60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, the massive performance figures from the Subaru matches the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. What's more, Subaru claims the BRZ STI convertible will be ready by 2015 and will only cost a fraction of the Porsche.
According to Subaru, the motivation behind the new model is to effectively "take all of the media and Internet rumors surrounding the highly successful BRZ sports car and delivers them in one fell swoop."
"Having just launched the current model to widespread critical acclaim, we are tired of fighting off the constant speculation about what's "next" and so we are just giving in and delivering all the speculation in one vehicle," said a Subaru spokesperson.
Working with a skunkworks lithium technology battery manufacturer, Subaru promises a tidy package that will fit snugly in the BRZ without altering its compact dimensions. An additional 200 lb. weight penalty is expected.
A very special machine, Subaru will also feature a new special edition "Noseeum Black" paint option for the highly anticipated hybrid BRZ STI convertible.
Beyond the sophisticated new technology and the fancy black paint, Subaru promises the new hybrid BRZ STI convertible will be as hardcore and visceral for the driving enthusiast as ever. To drive the message home, Subaru opted to take away the rear back-up camera. According to a Subaru exec, a flawless, unassisted parallel parking job is the true mark of a skilled driver. Finally, the Subaru hybrid BRZ STI twin turbo diesel convertible will be exclusively available with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
