Patrick is a 2-year-old leukemia patient whose father is a member of former President George H.W. Bush's Secret Service detail. The little boy recently started losing his hair due to treatments.
To support his battle, some members of the detail started shaving their heads and former commander-in-chief noticed what was going on. Having lost his third child and first daughter, Robin, to leukemia when she was four, and knowing what it felt like for the kid and the parents, 89-year-old Bush joined the cause.
A statement from his office Wednesday, accompanied by a picture of a grinning, very bald Bush, said the former president had gone under the razor along with his men to show solidarity with young Patrick.
The statement also said both George and his wife Barbara had made a donation to www.patrickspals.org, a fund set up for the family, whose last name was not disclosed, by other members of the Secret Service detail.
They are also organizing the Inaugural Patrick's Pals Motorcycle Benefit Run on August 10 in Kennebunkport -- a 50-mile motorcycle ride through the Maine countryside followed by a lunch and silent auction to raise funds for Patrick's treatments.
Bush made headlines earlier this month when he attended a White House ceremony honoring his "Points of Light" volunteer program.
