Gennady Golovkin is ready to return to the ring once more as he defends his IBF, IBO middleweight belts against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta of Poland. The fight happens this Friday, Dec. 18 starting at 5:00 p.m. E.T. with the main event expected to start by 8:00 p.m. E.T.
The Golovkin vs. Szeremeta fight will happen at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla. With no fans in attendance. Golovkin is a huge favorite (-3335) over Szeremeta (+900).
Curiously, rival Canelo Alvarez will also be fighting the following night. He will face Callum Smith in Texas. Assuming both fighters do come out victorious, pundits are now speculating the third showdown between GGG and the Mexican Brawler.
Alvarez and Golovkin first battled in 2017 and the fight ended in a split draw. One year later, a rematch was held with the Mexican winning via majority decision. Talk about trilogy fight has been suggested for years now but nothing has developed.
As far as Golovkin is concerned, the third encounter with Alvarez is something he has grown tired of thinking off. He feels that it has low chances of happening or perhaps not pushing through at all.
"I don't think about this because I'm tired of thinking about it," Golovkin said to AFP via Boxingscene. "It's been over two years that we've been throwing this around. It's not my fault that this fight has not taken place.
There are a lot of factors to consider. One is that Alvarez is on his own now and if he does want it, he will find a way to make it happen. Recall that the Mexican and Golden Boy Promotions have parted ways.
Golovkin seems fine returning to the ring and satisfied with whoever he faces. He does know the big money and attention that a trilogy fight will generate but is not holding up high hopes for it.
"Right now I'm in my professional boxing career and I don't see the need for that myself. But in future if there is a demand and an interest, then why not?" Golovkin said.
